Do you want to start a gift basket business? Are you overwhelmed with the many online resources that are available or concerned that you'll lose money by investing in a program you don't need? While starting a gift basket business sounds fun and easy, it's still a business and needs to be approached just like the start-up of any other business.
So, how can you be sure that you can succeed at owning your own gift basket business? Learning to read 'between the lines' will better prepare you for what's really involved. Here are some common phrases that I hear often when talking to people about opening a gift basket business and a little extra information that most don't want to hear:
#1 - It's Simple & Easy
Simple and easy depends on who's speaking. A doctor may tell you it's only a 'simple procedure' but that doesn't mean you should attempt it yourself.
As businesses go, a gift basket business IS simple to operate. Many people run their gift basket businesses from their homes or from a small office/warehouse. You just need a little creativity, some designs, some inventory, a phone, and the willingness to sell. If you understand how the business works you will be amazed at the simplicity - but getting to that point will require time and experience. You may have to invest in some training both in gift basket design and marketing and on how to run a business before you get to the point of being able to call it "simple".
Those who have learned from experience can look back and see how simple it COULD have been if they'd known what to do all along. Getting some good training can be a great assistance to your business efforts.
#2 - Anyone Can Do This
Sorry - starting a business of any kind is stressful and requires a learning curve; a gift basket business is no different. If you are attempting to start your business out of desperation or the belief you will make easy money, you will face enormous obstacles. On the other hand, if you are truly seeking a business you can learn, work at and make a living from, a gift basket business can do that for you.
Studies of successful business people concur that those who "make it" have common qualities of persistence, patience and desire. These qualities are essential when trying to start a gift basket business as well - do you have them?
#3 - Turnkey
The term 'turnkey' used to mean that a business was set up and ready to go. You will find the term in business classifieds where the new owner can just step in and start running the business. Unfortunately some marketers use the term to suggest a gift basket business is fully automated - that there is no work involved. The term is often seen on eBay where marketers are selling gift basket websites.
I'm sorry to burst your bubble, there is always work involved when starting a business, no matter what business your trying to start up. If the business really is turnkey, then you will begin work right away because it has already been set to go. If you want an automated business, don't go into the gift basket business, it will never be automated. There will always be gift baskets to design, make and get delivered.
#4 - It Won't Cost Much
You absolutely CAN start a gift basket business with little money, but be prepared that a combination of little money and lack of experience will stifle your efforts immensely.
Most individuals who start or run a business with no money have learned how to make use of the their business experience. They have paid their dues by trying other businesses that cost money. Often they have spent time in and around the gift basket industry and they've been able to see where they can cut costs.
If you are prepared to spend a LOT of time researching before starting your business you may be one of the few who does it right the first time. For most people though, expect to pay something towards your gift basket business education before seeing results - you just can't buy experience.
Beyond education, also expect to invest in the supplies and inventory you will need to fill your orders. Starting small is okay, just be sure you have enough money to invest as you grow.
#5 – I Won’t Have To Do Any Selling, I'll Sell My Baskets On The Internet
Again, you absolutely CAN sell your gift baskets on the internet, however, building and marketing a website is not as easy as the old saying, "build it and they'll come". Internet marketing has become a sophisticated process that includes optimizing your website to get ranked in the search engines, building a newsletter list and email marketing, and creating content to draw your customers back to your site.
Recently there's been a lot of talk about businesses marketing with their blogs and RSS feeds, do you even know how to do any of this? Again, either you have the experience, you spend the time and money to gain the experience or you hire someone to do it for you, but don't think people will just "show-up" when you launch your website. And lastly, never think that you'll be able to get out of selling because you have a website, business is selling, and this goes for a gift basket business the same as it goes for a Fortune 500 company.
Starting a gift basket business obviously has its share of work involved, but if you find you have a passion for creating, selling and running your own business, and love to create gift baskets, then a gift basket company can have enormous payoffs. As long as you are willing to sacrifice time and money to achieve success, running your own business is enormously satisfying and can give you more time to do what you really want to do in life.
Creating a successful gift basket business is within the grasp of nearly everyone who is prepared to stick to it. Face the task of starting your business with realistic expectations while continuing to dream big and you may just surprise yourself!

 Hi Gift Basket Pros!
I just wanted to let you guys know about the great new item we got! It's a 4-tier display unit from Create Your Celebrations that you can dress however you want. I just got set up with the manufacturer yesterday and it's so new I don't think the first shipment is even in their warehouse yet (but it will be within a couple of days). But, I wanted to get this in front of you guys, so you can start thinking about how you will use it.
I'm going to receive a sample here in a few days and I'll start to play with it. When I come up with ideas, I'll post pics here. But just think of the possibilities. You can use it as a centerpiece for bridal showers, baby showers and housewarming parties, just load it up with products and ribbon, how great is that? Or mix the product with cupcakes, perfect! I'm thinking maybe, if I can find a way to secure the product, that it might make a great base for your really big gift baskets, wouldn't that be great? Well, when I get the sample, I'll let you know.
The picture shown here is one the manufacturer sent me, it's a housewarming centerpiece.
If you want to order, you'll find it in our catalog for the fantastic cost of $7.50 each, here's the link:
Four-Tiered Display Unit
Please Note - You can place your order for this item right along with any order you'd place at our website, however, it will be shipped directly from the manufacturer arriving in a separate shipment.
Well, until next time, signing off!

I saw an interesting question on the Gift Basket Messageboard today asking about niche target markets. The poster has a product for kids that she will add to her baskets that will make them unique and she will focus on that target niche. Her question was "Is niche target marketing too limiting?".
Then another poster said they wanted to do the same thing, only in the Christian products area.
There were some answers giving suggestions on how to market to the "kid" niche that were very good, such as using a website, placing a sample basket in daycare centers, and partnering with local florists and toy stores. All great help for this newby seeking advice.
However, no one answered the question she asked, "Is niche target marketing too limiting?" Well, here's my answer to that ~ NO!!!!!!!!
First off, when you're first starting out, like the person who asked the question, limiting yourself to only a few designs and a few places to market is a good thing. Remember, there's a lot to learn and it costs a LOT of money to be everything to everyone. Second, if after you get your feet wet and have a little success, you can always add another niche, when you're ready.
Speaking strictly from an internet marketing perspective, niche marketing is the ONLY way to go. A website makes its money from search engine traffic, and when you go to any of the top search engines (Google, Yahoo!, and MSN) and type in the keyword phrase "gift baskets", it will come back with "Results 1 - 10 of about 14,000,000 for gift baskets." Yeah, that's 14 MILLION. How much of a chance do you think you have at even getting in the top 300 websites? Let me tell you, slim to none, the competition is stiff and these people know how to optimize their pages to rank high.
Now, let's say you try for a niche instead. Search for "gift baskets for kids". First there are only 5 million sites that come up, but aside from that, if you look at the results, the sites listed quickly go to sites that aren't relative, like within the first two pages. So, if you set up some content pages on your site where each one targets a keyword phrase, it shouldn't take long to start ranking high, since these pages would be relative. In otherwords, not as much competition and you will get traffic from that.
On the other point, where I said you can always start a new niche, I firmly believe that each niche should have it's own website. So, when you're ready, you pick a new niche and repeat the process. That's the way to success!
Lastly, there is some GREAT information I want to refer you to about search engine traffic and it's free. If you're going to try to sell to a niche on the internet, it would be well worth your time to read and listen to this info (yes, there's 3 hours of audio). It's written and recorded by Alice Seba (yes, again, I like her work!). You can get it at www.TruthAboutTraffic.com. When you get to the site, there's some info for you to read and at the bottom, there's a sign-up box. Yeah, it's going to cost you your email address, but Alice is really good, she never sells or distributes her lists and if you want to unsubscribe, there's a link in every email she sends. But, FYI, her emails usually give really good info about internet marketing, you might want to stay subscribed.
Well, until next time, signing off!

Hi everyone! So this is my second post today, you know what they say, when it rains it pours! Anyway, I got this free report and thought it might be helpful to some of you so I wanted to get it posted right away.
For those of you who have been reading my blog for a while, you probably know I'm a big fan of Alice Seba. She's a savvy lady that's making a nice living working from home. Well, she sent me an free guide that she said I could distribute to my readers, so I decided to share.
The book isn't about starting a gift basket business or anything like that but it is about starting an online business. I know a lot of my readers are new to owning a business, especially an online business and thought this report might have a little info in it that might help in that area. It's only 8 pages long, so it won't take a long time to read and you can pick and choose the sections that will be helpful to you.
The section I thought might be most useful for a gift basket business is the section about establishing an online presence. Every business needs a website and the guide gets you started thinking about that.
Anyway, enough from me, here's the link already! It's a PDF document so you will need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader software to view it. If you don't have this software, you can get it at: Adobe Reader.
Here's the link to the guide:
A Step-By-Step Action Guide To Choosing And Starting Your Own Online Business
I hope you enjoy the information and feel free to share it with a friend who might enjoy it as well.

Hi everyone! I wanted to come back today and post what I wrote in the newsletter yesterday about posting pictures of your gift baskets on this blog. Instead of me writing it all over again, I'm just going to copy and paste what I wrote in the newsletter. Also, this opportunity is for newsletter subscribers only, so if you want to participate and you're not already subscribed, you can do so in the right column on the homepage at
http://www.giftbasketwholesalesupply.com
So here's my copy and paste from the newsletter:
===================================
Give Us A Pic, We'll Give You A Link
I'd love to show YOUR creations on OUR website. If you make a basket that includes any of our products and want me to post a picture of it on our blog, just send me an email and attach the pic. Also send me your full name, your company name, your city and state and the URL to your website and I'll post it on the blog linking to your website. This will only be available to those who are members of our newsletter.
Now you ask, "what's in it for me?". Well, if you don't already know, search engines, particularly Google, use "link popularity" to rank the sites they have indexed. Now everyone knows the higher you are in Google, the better your traffic will be and the more sales you'll get.
Well, when Google determines your link popularity, they take a few things into consideration. First they look at how many other websites link to YOUR site. Next they determine the type of links that link to you, are they links from other popular pages or just links from pages that no one knows about. Also, are they one-way links or did you just "trade" links with another site, and of course, one-way links are better.
So, what's the benefit for you to have your website link on our blog? Well, first off, it will be a one-way link and Google will give that link more credit than one you traded with a friend. Second, Google assigns what they call "PageRank" to every page they have indexed. It's a ranking from 1-10 that's assigned when they analyse your pages. Getting a PageRank at all is a feat in and of itself and anyone with a PageRank of 5 or 6 is probably on page one for their search term. In other words, getting a 5 or 6 is outstanding. Well, we're not quite a 5 or a 6, but our blog's homepage is a 3. And our website homepage is a 4 and that's pretty good. So having a link on a page that even has a PageRank will help you more than having a link on a page that doesn't ~ and we're a 3.
Lastly, ever so often, I will choose a basket to be on our homepage (remember, it has a PageRank of 4). Of course, those baskets will have to use a lot of our product and they will have to be exceptional, but I'm sure it will happen.
Now, I do reserve the right to not post any baskets, and I reserve the right to only post the baskets I want to post and when I want to post them. So don't expect that if you send your pic it will automatically get posted, it may not get posted for 6 months, it may not get posted at all. I reserve that right. But chances are good, I'll post it and you'll get a link. Also, be sure you send a good picture, if I can't make the pic look good, I won't post it. And one more thing, I won't be notifying anyone as to whether or not their basket will get posted or when or if. I don't have time to do that. I'll just get the pics and post them when I want, whenever I want.
If you're interested, send your pics as an attachment and your info to blogbaskets@giftbasketwholesalesupply.com.

So you got your website up and running. You hired an excellent web designer to craft a perfect home page that will really draw in the visitors and inspire them to buy. You have a beautiful catalog filled with pictures of your beautiful gift baskets, each with a detailed description. You have a section dedicated to the services you provide with praises from past customers. And you have the best online shopping cart service out there so that your customers can buy from you with no hassles and next day shipping. That's great! Now where are your customers?
Driving traffic to your website is a much discussed and much misunderstood venture. There are a million theories out there that claim to drive tons of new visitors to your site daily. There are services that say they will increase your traffic by an enormous percentage if you will only pay them their small fee over a period of fifty years. There are so-called experts who will place your pages on all the best search engines on the net. They claim that with this kind of blanket exposure, your traffic numbers will explode within days.
I'm here to tell you, the only sure-fire way to draw productive traffic to your website is through targeted marketing. The important word to notice here is "productive." You can draw hundreds of thousands of visitors to your site every year by hosting a giveaway of some kind. Services that search the internet for freebies will have people clicking a link to your site like crazy. But these people are not there to buy anything from you ... quite the opposite. They are empty clicks. There is nothing productive about this kind of traffic. People looking for free stuff will rarely make you any kind of money. And that's what you're after, right?
So target your marketing to the people who really want to buy what you have to offer. How? Start by trying these basic steps...
* Hire an experienced copywriter. The copy that is on your site makes a world of difference in the sales you garner from the internet. Most important to targeted marketing are the keywords found in your title, H1 tags and metatags in the website's code. An experienced copywriter will know how to determine the most effective keywords and place them strategically in your site's copy. He or she will know which words work as triggers to get make your potential customers feel like they trust and want to buy from you. If you cannot afford a copywriter, there are some great courses and that teach copywriting, two that come to mind are The Ezine Queen and Red Hot Copy.
* You can enroll in pay per click search engines. Yahoo Search Marketing is one of these, but let me warn you, most of the most popular keywords, like "gift basket", are already bid up so high you probably won't be able to afford them. If you can think of some original phrases that people use to search for your gift baskets or other products and services, you can post your ad next to the text that comes up when people search for that phrase. Every time someone clicks on your ad to go to your site, you pay Yahoo whatever fee you bid for that term. The key here however is to find terms that don't have huge bid amounts, you'll need to be creative but don't bid on terms that don't target those who will buy from you.
* Submit articles to free ezine sites. This is by far one of the best ways I know to get targeted traffic to your site. You can write, or hire someone to write, an article for you about gift giving or corporate gift giving. Give some free tips, offer your experience, and be accessible in the text. Then at the bottom of the article, you get a link to your website advertising your services. Every time someone publishes your article in their ezine or newsletter, they must use your web address at the bottom. There are many courses and ebooks to learn how to use this type of marketing, one of the best I know is called Easy Article Marketing. If you need help writing articles, Just Articles will ghostwrite for you and their prices start at $7.00 for a very short article and go up to $15.00 for a 600-800 word article that you will be able to claim as your own.
These are just a few of the many ways to ensure you get "productive" traffic. Empty clicks are just that ... empty... and your wallet will stay that way, too!

Below is an article by a work at home mom that I highly respect. She's one who has done her homework and take the time to learn how to market her business.
Setting goals at the beginning of a new year is what everyone does, maybe you think, "oh, I'll just forget about them anyway", but consider this, if now now when? The beginning of the year is as good a time as any, and who knows, maybe this time you'll get serious. Hope you enjoy the article.
Setting & Achieving Your Business Goals
By Alice Seba
There's no time like the present to review the past year and make some solid goals for your growing business. Here are a few tips for setting and achieving those goals:
1. Brainstorm - Start writing a list of things you'd like to accomplish. At first, you might think you don't have any ideas, but soon they will come pouring out. You may even end up with too many goals that you could realistically accomplish. Prioritize and decide which are most important.
2. Write your goals down in one central place and record any changes you make to your goals - This way you can track your progress and will be become even better at setting goals for yourself in the future.
3. Make sure your goals are challenging, yet attainable - In other words, don't make them all too easy, but then again, don't list a bunch that you will never achieve. If you make them too easy, you will feel like you haven't accomplished much and if you make them too difficult, you'll feel defeated.
4 . Set a realistic timeframe for your goals - Remember, you can't do everything at once. If you have short and simple goals, set short timeframes. For your more involved goals, analyze the steps needed to complete them and be realistic about how much time you will need to accomplish your goals.
5. As you write down your goals, ask why is this my goal? - If your goal is to set up an affiliate program for your site, you will motivate yourself better if you understand and remind yourself why you are doing this. It may be to increase your website traffic, to earn more income or to create brand recognition for your product. It could be any number of things, but make sure you know what they are.
6. Make your goals measurable - Don't just say, you want to learn about graphics. Make a specific plan. Perhaps, you want to learn about Flash graphics and you want to be able to make your own Flash movie. Or perhaps, you're happy just being able to design your own animated gif. You need to be able to see when you've achieved your goals.
7. Identify what "tools" you will use and how will obtain the "tools" to achieve your goals - Perhaps, your goal is to build your own web page for the first time. You need to think about what you need to do that. Two of the many things you might need are software and a tutorial or the help of knowledgeable friend. You'll need to purchase the software or find the freeware. You'll also need to look around for the tutorial or see when your friend might have time to help you.
8. Don't overload yourself - We all want to get everything done and to be as perfect as possible, but don't give yourself too much. Remember, time with family is why you have a home business. It's okay to have a larger number of small, easily attainable goals, but do limit the number of major goals that require a number of resources and significant time to achieve. Remember, as in a previous step, you can always revisit and revise your goals if need be.
9. Divide your goals into short term and long term goals - If you keep this list separate, you can better organize yourself to complete them. Short term goals usually can be completed at anytime with not much time commitment. Your long term goals will require more involvement and you don't likely want to take on too many long term goals at one time.
10. Revisit and revise your goals when necessary - This doesn't mean that if you're a procrastinator, you can just come back and push all your dates back. This exercise is to see if you are on track with your goals. Perhaps, you're a little ahead of schedule and you can add a goal or two. Maybe, you're falling behind, and that's okay. You need to look at why you're falling behind. Is it because you didn't dedicate the time necessary, you didn't have the tools to accomplish your goals or was it just unrealistic planning? You can learn from all these things and set better goals in the future. If you do extend a deadline, make a new plan on how you will meet that new timeframe.
Always, congratulate yourself on a job well done. Share your successes with your family and peers. Then start working on the next goal...

I have a lot of visitors to my site that are just "considering" whether or not they should start a gift basket business, that's why I have the Gift Biz Resource Page that gives a "newby" some idea of where to start.
One thing all businesses need today is a website and to some the task is a daunting one. Without any tech skills other than surfing the net and handling email, some gift basket business owners are scared, don't have the time, or think it's such an expensive endeavor they don't even want to consider a website. However, it doesn't have to be scary and isn't expensive at all. Actually, it's darn right easy and cheap and is no longer just for the "tech geek".
Once upon a time, you had to learn HTML (hyper-text markuplanguage) to build a web page but today you have so many options to create your own website that don't require you to learn complicated coding. You can use a WYSIWG (What You See Is What You Get) editor like Microsoft's FrontPage. This software allows you to write your web page as you would any other document and you can drag and drop images easily. It takes a bit of practice to make things look the way you'd like, but you can also purchase templates to create a professional look and feel.
So, now we know that you don't have to be a technological genius to build a web page -- what else do you need to create your web presence?
Domain: This is the name of your website. You will need to purchase a name that will represent your company or personal web presence. For example: ebay.com is Ebay's domain name.
Web Host: You will also need to find a company that will store your various files on the Internet. This is called a web host. You usually pay them monthly for their service.
Your Next Steps to Building Your Web Page: WYSIWG software can cost hundreds of dollars and allows you to build web pages that provide basic information to your visitors. However, if you are looking to have more interactivity and features to your web page like:
message board
shopping cart
mailing list
coupons
and other options, you may want to look at a more comprehensive web building service, like the easy site builder at http://www.InternetBasedFamily.com. This service allows you to create feature-rich and professional looking web pages in a matter of minutes. You can also purchase your domain there and they will host your pages on the Internet. There is a 10-day free trial to help you ensure it's the right web-building tool for you and prices start at just $17 a month.
All in all, building a website isn't as complicated as you may have thought previously. All it takes is some point-and-click web building software, a domain name and a web host. So don't be scared, get out there and do what you know you need to do to make your gift basket business a success!

If you would like to to be added to an email list so I can notify you when new memberships re-open, just send an email to mm@giftbasketwholesalesupply.com. Your name will be added to a list and I'll email you when the time comes that Mom Masterminds is again accepting new members. In the meantime you can read the Mom Mastermind blog at www.mommasterminds.com/blog.
